Term vs. permanent life insurance

What each kind is for, what it costs, and why most families start with term.

Term life pays a set amount if you pass away while the policy is in effect. Your monthly payment and coverage stay the same for the entire term.

Permanent life (whole life, universal life, and variants) covers you your whole life and can build cash over time. We only quote term coverage here.

How to choose

Ask what you're protecting, not which insurance to buy. If what needs protection ends—a loan that gets paid down, kids who'll eventually move out—then term coverage is the answer.

What people in Stockton often do

Many households do well with a 20- or 30-year term sized to their actual needs, bought sooner rather than later when rates are most favorable.
